This is the universally accepted size as goldfish are known as the pigs of the freshwater tank due to the high amount of excreta they emit. Do you think a fish store will take them back? I could try to find someone local who can give them a better home, but I imagine most experienced fish people won't want them as they will have the same problem as I. The acceptable tank size for one regular goldfish is 30 Gallons and add 10 gallons for every other goldfish you want to add to the same tank. So the question is - what do I do with them? I could keep them for now, but they will only get bigger and harder for me to "dispose" of them. It all boils down to the size and growth rate of the fish. However, if you have smaller goldfish varieties, you could keep up to 4 in the same tank. If you are a fan of common goldfishes, you may only be able to keep 2 in a 30-35 gallon tank.
It's just not practical for me to get a tank big enough for all four, or really even four tanks with one goldfish each. In a 10,000 gallon pond, the filtration system will handle between 20 and 30 million gallons of debris-laden water. So, depending on the goldfish species living in the 30-35 gallon tank, you may be able to keep more fish. I now know that this tank is not big enough even now, much less as they grow. If you want to keep more than one, you are going to need at. The variations mentioned before would have either a different height or a different length, the width usually stays the same. Despite my ignorance, they seem to be thriving and the biggest of the four is 3-4 inches long.
